Ignition Interlock Device

Conviction of a DUI in Clearwater can result in the installation of an ignition interlock device in any vehicle that you own or lease upon reinstatement of your license or a hardship license. If this is your first DUI offense with a blood or breath alcohol level below 0.15, the court has discretion to order use of this device. However, the court will mandate installation of the ignition interlock device on a first DUI offense of 0.15 or above or any subsequent DUI offenses in Clearwater. Depending on your particular circumstances, you may be required to use this device for up to 5 years. You will also be responsible for paying the costs of the ignition interlock device. The ignition interlock device takes a sample of your breath before the vehicle will start. If your sample reads a breath-alcohol level of 0.05 or higher, the vehicle will not start. To prevent misuse or deception, the device will also test your breath-alcohol level at random intervals while the car is running. In Clearwater, installation of the ignition interlock device is completed through Interlock Systems of Florida. Suncoast Safety Council will handle the supervision of the device throughout your required use. If you are facing the possibility of having an ignition interlock device installed in your vehicle, contact our office immediately at 727-324-4105 to discuss your options and minimize the devastating effects.
